From Situation Calculus To Fluent Calculus: A New Motivation

چکیده

While historically the Fluent Calculus arose from approaches to the Frame Problem using non-classical, linear logics, an alternative is to view it as a development of the Situation Calculus with the aim of coping with the inferential aspect of the Frame Problem. Starting oo from the concept of successor state axioms as a solution to the representational aspect, we show how by gradual improvement regarding the inferential aspect, but without losing the representational merits , one nally arrives at a novel version of the Fluent Calculus. We illustrate that under the provision that actions have no so-called open eeects, any Situation Calculus speciication can be transformed into an essentially equivalent Fluent Calculus speciication. Our hope is that this alternative access to the Fluent Calculus both clariies its role in relation to the most popular axiomatization paradigm and helps enhancing its acceptance.

From Situation Calculus to Fluent Calculus: State Update Axioms as a Solution to the Inferential Frame Problem

Successor state axioms provide a solution to the famous Frame Problem as far as the representational aspect is concerned. Solving in classical, monotonic logic the additional inferential Frame Problem, on the other hand, was the major motivation for the development of the Fluent Calculus a decade or so ago. Yet the expressiveness of the latter in comparison to the Situation Calculus remained a ...

Reconciling Situation Calculus and Fluent Calculus

The Situation Calculus and the Fluent Calculus are successful action formalisms that share many concepts. But until now there is no formal relation between the two calculi that would allow to formally analyze the relationship between the two approaches as well as between the programming languages based on them, Golog and FLUX. Furthermore, such a formal relation would allow to combine Golog and...

Action, Belief Change and the Frame Problem: A Fluent Calculus Approach

This paper develops a solution to the analogue of the frame problem that arises when the belief state of an agent is axiomatized in the presence of belief changing actions. It follows the work of Scherl and Levesque which adapted the approach to the frame problem of Reiter to the case of the analogue of the frame problem that arises when knowledge and knowledge producing actions are added to th...

Continuous Processes in the Fluent Calculus

Among the known predicate calculus formalisms for axiomatizing commonsense reasoning about actions, the Fluent Calculus stands out in offering a solution not only to the representational but also the inferential aspect of the fundamental Frame Problem. In this paper we extend this formalism to modeling hybrid systems, which involve both discrete and continuous change. We borrow basic notions fr...

A Feasible Approach to Disjunctive Knowledge in Situation Calculus

A Feasible Approach to Disjunctive Knowledge in Situation Calculus Stavros Vassos Master of Science Graduate Department of Computer Science University of Toronto 2005 In this thesis we present LP , a reinterpretation of situation calculus based on intuitions from many-valued logics. The key difference is that the notion of truth is based on the fact that a term is interpreted into a set of obje...
